My research includes the investigation
of influences on the eating habits of young children
from understudied ethnic groups, food consumption patterns
of children, and nutrition education of primary care
providers.
Recent completed research projects include: 1) focus
groups to elicit health beliefs and food preparation
methods from Chinese-American caregivers of preschool-aged
children, and 2) a pilot study examining the effects
of acculturation (e.g., how immigrants adopt the behaviors
and beliefs of their new country) on the eating habits
and weight status of Chinese-American pre-school-aged
children in Houston. In addition, my research focuses
on the evaluation of food intake patterns among children
and young adults who participated in a long-term study
of cardiovascular risk factors in children.
I also write chapters for an electronic physician
reference library, UpToDate. Each chapter focuses on
current information and recommendations, geared toward
patient care, on nutrition-related areas for children
and adolescents. The information can be accessed by
general primary care providers through a CD-ROM or
on-line ( www.uptodate.com ).
Future studies will focus on assessing the health
status and eating patterns of Chinese-American families
in a larger study.
